The Armor of God

Cling clang! Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Outside of praying for the salvation and protection of our family members every day, I can think of no better and more powerful prayer than praying the armor of God on yourself and the ones you love each and every day.

When I wake up in the morning, I pray the armor of God on my family before my feet even hit the floor. I don't feel complete anymore without doing this. I will never  again send my family out into the world without being suited up properly! (It works! I have seen a huge difference in our attitudes toward each other in the mornings since I began doing this, and I haven't told anyone I've been doing it. Not even my husband. Hi, husband. Haha.)

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints....

I wanted to share a sample prayer with you and give this it's own page for quick reference for anyone who would like to use this as a guide. This is something very similar to what I pray for my family every morning. After all of my usual thanks and praise, I start in with something like this....

Dear God,

Today I pray the armor of God on my family. With the helmet of salvation firmly in place I pray that you help us to take every thought captive. Help us to dwell on thoughts that are true, what is right and pure and lovely and admirable (Philippians 4:8) and I pray that you remove any lies of the enemy, replacing them in our minds with your truth and wisdom.

I pray that with the breastplate of righteousness in place you will guard our hearts, keeping them pure and holy. Remove our hearts of stone and give us hearts of flesh. Renew our love for one another and remove any anger or bitterness we may have towards others. Help us to forgive as you forgive us.

With our feet fitted with the readiness given by the gospel of peace, I pray that we are salt and light wherever we go today. Please grant us the peace that surpasses all understanding when we walk in your ways. Help to keep us on the straight and narrow path, always seeking your will and way for our lives.

With the belt of truth strapped around our waists I pray that you help us to live this day with truth and integrity. Give us discernment to know the voice of the enemy from your voice, Father. Help us not to fall for the schemes of Satan and to be attracted to your truth.

Help us to take up the shield of faith, which protects us from Satan's fiery darts. Protect us from the temptations of this world and make us strong and immovable in the things that we believe.

And finally I pray that you help us to wield the sword of the spirit - your word. When the enemy attacks allow us to recall scripture that we may make him flee. Your word is sharper than any double edged sword. May it do a surgery in our hearts today, molding us, making us, and shaping us into the people you want us to be.

With the armor of God in place I pray that our family is ready for battle this day, that we may bring you honor and glory. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

It takes a minute - just one minute to pray, but it can affect hours and hours of your life each day. The strength and protection it offers is a priceless gift to give the ones you love! And if things start to go south during your day, just remembering this prayer will remind you that you have all of the tools you need to face any trial. It's empowering to know you are spiritually packing and completely capable of kicking the enemy to the curb. Try it!
